As I sit down to compose today’s blog, the sun is rising over the nearby hills. I didn’t get up early, as usual, (3 or 4 a.m.); but slept in until 5 a.m. It’s Wednesday, a three-newspaper day. Number one on my list is our local Argus-Courier. Today’s news section brought me up-to-date on several areas of interest: fire safety, medical services, the Pulse of Petaluma, the Fire & Police Department logs. Our Petaluma is a great place to live, work, play and learn. Always something going on in our favorite “River Town.”

The inside pages reveal that the Rainier connection will return to the political radar screen and that (thanks to JJ), our youth athletic teams are once again excelling in their respective sports. Oh, let’s not forget “The Letters to the Editor.” (A12) Letters of support and appreciation for Tomasini’s Rex Hardware store continue to be written. One writer closed her letter with, “I wish Bill Soberanes was still alive to give the building the proper eulogy as only, Bill could do.” I agree that Bill’s comments and thoughts about this historic building would have been interesting to read. However, on page A13, a guest commentary did document “A bit of Rex Hardware history.” The amount of “Then & Now” information was most interesting, as well as a genealogical record of ownership. As one of the historic walking tour docents for our downtown business district, I plan to include some of this information in my walk this weekend. But, it the most impressive part of these comments is the sense of community spirit and pride that is expressed. Jeff and his staff are essential to Petaluma, and their customers want them to know it through their letters and signs. The site is now cleared, as you can see in the photographs. When the grand opening takes place, there won’t be enough room in the streets for all their friends and supporters. I hope to be there, do you?

I could go on with more comments about the Community Section, but I have yet to read the comics in the other two papers. They, too, can reveal what’s happening in today’s world. Don’t forget to check out the Argus-Courier’s online edition http://www.arguscourier.com and be sure to explore the various blogs. Each week, in the “old fashion” printed version of the newspaper, one of their bloggers is featured. Enjoy!

On Our Radar Screen

It looks like one of the “hot button” items on the national level – Net Neutrality – may fall off our screen because the Congress may not be able to agree on a final version that will pass both houses. That’s too bad, for us, the consumers. The longer it takes to modify the 1996 Communications Act, the farther we will fall behind in how telecommunications and technology might enhance how we live, work, play and learn. Stay tuned.
