I know – there was supposed to be a “break” in my blogging; but, how can you stay away when –

(#1) the Argus-Courier “spotlights” a couple of your blogs? (Were they making a subtle hint?) And (#2), when a fellow blogger, Cheryl, says that she and her husband “will miss them” and don’t want me “to be gone too long!” (Besides, someone has to pick up those extra !!!! she plans to discard.)

Seriously, I wanted to pick up on an item that Katie Watts mentioned in one of her Yesteryears observations from 25 years ago (August 10, 1981) Back then the 20th Annual Fiesta at the Old Adobe had among its many activities from the past, a Whiskerino contest. It was reported that 8,000 people attended. (WOW!!) Winners were announced for the following categories: long beards, short beards, moustaches, and goatees.

Guess what! It is now 2006, and we just mailed out invitations to last year’s participants for this year’s contest. Ever since Bill Soberanes died, the Farmers’ Market and community volunteers have sponsored a Whiskerino contest in his memory. The 2006 event will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 14th, at Walnut Park. We have already received the first entry application back, for the “Moustache & Goatee” category.

Please help spread the word. We may not act 8,000 spectators, but we will have fun! Stay tuned for future updates.Cheryl – thanks for the extra !!! I love to use them, too – they certainly beat – three-dot journalism!)
