Historically, what a way to begin the New Year! What was Then, is back as Now.

I know it sounds confusing, but the facade that was added to the building located at 119 Petaluma Boulevard, North in the 1950s (originally, our Main Street), has been removed and the original ornate front has been restored.

It’s beautiful. This restoration project was made possible by the cooperative efforts of the owner, the City of Petaluma, and interested citizens. It took months to complete. But, IMHO, was well worth it. I’m certain that when the Walking Tour docents from the Museum start their weekend tours of our Historic Downtown Business District in May, they will stop and show off our latest historic renovation.

An 1883 Hartford Insurance Co. map published by the Sanborn Map Co. indicates that a Variety Store, a Paints & Oil shop, and a combination Variety Store & Book Bindery were housed at this location. A century old photographs shows a sign – Brothers Furniture & Clothing at the top of the building. Another record stated, “This is an Ironfront building with a 1950s style slipcover made of plywood and stucco.” J.C. Penney’s was once there as well as Marin Outdoors. If you go back to 1852, it is reported that this site was the town’s first blacksmith shop. Later, it became a buggy and wagon maker’s store.

Hopefully, this restored historic gem will inspire Petalumans to learn more about the historical roots of our favorite “River Town.” Please remember that in 2008 we will be celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Petaluma being declared a Chartered City in the Golden State. Many Sesquicentennial Celebration events and activities are currently being planned to take place throughout the year. Stay tuned.
